Virgin Atlantic’s Riyadh Launch Spurs Strengthening UK-Saudi Ties and Tourism Surge

Virgin Atlantic has officially commenced its new route between London Heathrow and Riyadh, marking a significant step in deepening connections between the United Kingdom and Saudi Arabia. The airline’s arrival is being hailed as a milestone in Saudi Arabia’s transformation into a premier tourism destination.
According to His Excellency Ahmed Al Khateeb, Saudi Arabia’s Minister for Tourism, this new service not only enhances options for travelers but also reflects Saudi Arabia’s growing appeal as a global hub. In 2024 alone, Saudi welcomed 128 million air passengers, representing a 15% increase from the previous year—a testament to its surging prominence in international tourism.
The new route complements the Saudi Vision 2030 strategy, which aims for robust economic and social development through tourism and increased international collaboration. Air travel between the UK and Saudi Arabia is projected to expand by 24% by 2035, further highlighting the importance of this partnership for trade, tourism, and cultural exchange.
Virgin Atlantic’s expansion is expected to benefit not only Riyadh—a city recognized for its dynamic events, sports, and lifestyle offerings—but also destinations like AlUla and the Red Sea, broadening access to Saudi Arabia’s diverse attractions. The airline’s entry is seen as a catalyst for new tourism opportunities and stronger people-to-people ties between the two nations.
